Making a 'swallowing' trick sword: Get a metal tape measure that is about 5/8" wide. Break off a 2' piece (do not use the clip at the tip) Use sand paper to sand off all the yellow paint and numbers. It should look like a metal sword blade. Also sand down any part of the edges that may have gotten sharp with your sanding so far, also smooth any nicks in it. Wear gloves and hold the bottom 2 inches of one end in the left hand. Holding a pencil, dowell, or ball plastic ball point pen in the right fingers, place the right thumb into the concave edge of the blade forcing it to bend around the pencil. Strip the whole length of the blade against the pencil. (very much like curling a ribbon with a pair of scissors) The edge of the blade can be sharp, so do this carefully!
Now test the blade: Move it so it locks into a straight line. If it won't do this but keeps curling up, you can try to fix it by bending to increase the concave curve along the entire length of it. You can do this easily by placing the concave blade edge along the edge of a table and pressing down on the back of the blade all the way along the length to increase it's concave curve. Once it is straight, try pushing the the tip away from the curve of the blade. If it coils up easily and it also locks easily and fairly sturdily into a straight line, then it is ready. If it does not at least start to curl up when the tip is bent back, then repeat the curling over the pencil. Once the blade is adjusted so that it will both coil up easily, and stay straight when straightened it is ready. Mount 2" of the blade(the non-curled end you were holding) into a wooden sword handle. A wooden handle can be made by cutting a piece of 1/2" or so wood or plywood into a handle shape, sand the edges to smooth. Route or drill out a hole 2" deep, 1/4" wide and 5/8" long, just big enough for the blade to slip in. Fill the hole with epoxy, put the blade in place, and let it set. To perform: Practice handling the sword with the blade extended so that it looks natural, stays straight and looks solid. It is possible to cut up a small to medium thickness carrot with the blade. Especially near the handle of the sword. Face the audience. Hold the handle by your belly with the blade curved out towards the audience, tip up towards your mouth. Place the tip in your mouth, lift the handle up over your head, tipping your head back with the sword tip still in your mouth, so that the blade is now curved away from the audience. Gently bite the tip of the sword, which should start it secretly curling towards the roof of your mouth. Slide the sword slowly into your mouth, allowing it to curl up in your mouth as you do so. It looks identical to a sword going down your throat. You can remove the blade by reversing the actions. At the very end use your lips to straighten out the last bit of sword blade locking it back into a straight line. Practice in a mirror. Do it till you can impress yourself. This trick can look that good!
