GAG

A clown holding a cane approaches someone and says: "Maybe you'll need some support as a senior, from medicare.  We want you to hold onto this. This may be the only support you get!

Down the length of the cane is written 'Medicare Plan for Seniors"

If they take it, it falls apart in their hands, into a strung together link of cane pieces. If they don't take it, it falls apart in the clowns hand. Either way the clown takes the broken cane and says "you'll be fine, you'll be fine", and he walks away trying to use the now totally limp cane.

Props:

A fallapart cane

Instructions to build:

Needed:

1/4" drill bit, long

drill

1 light colored cane

a small screw

strong string (or 'trick line')

A permanant marker for writing on the cane

1 small washer

Cut the cane into 6 or 7 pieces using a thin blade (hacksaw works well), square across the cane (not angled). Number the pieces so you can put it back together in the proper order.  Using a long thin (1/4") drillbit, drill lengthwise through center of the entire length of the bottom piece. If it's perfectly centered, great, if it's not, don't worry, it will still work if it's coming out the far end (not out through the side of the cane). Leave the drillbit through the center of that piece, and use it to mark where to start drilling on the next piece (line the two pieces up in their original alignment).  Then remove the bit from the first piece and drill the second. Follow this till the handle piece. Instead of drilling all the way through it, just drill about 3" into it.  Cut a troft into the side of the cane to connect with the 3" hole.  The troft should be lined up with the hook of the handle on the inside edge (across from the hook.)

Put the small screw into the side of the cane, so that it crosses through the troft at about 1/4 inch from the end of the troft.

Tie your string onto that screw, then string it through all the pieces down to the bottom piece.

Put the string through the washer.

Now pull the pieces into alignment, except for the top piece which you put at 90 degrees, to give you an extra 1 1/2 inches. Pull it fairly tight, tie a knot (big enough to not pull out through the washer) and test it.

When it's tied to the proper tension, the cane will be stiff when you line up ALL the pieces (including the top handle), but will fall apart when you turn the top handle piece down (letting the string fall out of the troft, and giving you extra slack.

Write down the length of it "Senior Medicare Plan"

TIPS:

Handing the cane to someone, just make sure they are taking the cane by the handle, with the hook part of the handle towards the ground and it will fall apart as they take the handle, and you let go of the rest of it.

Practice with this fun prop, and it will look a lot like a normal solid wooden cane.  Find out what you can and cannot do.

Of course always twist the lettering so that it all lines up perfectly.
