GAG:

One clown balancing a rolling ball on the edge of a spinning umbrella.  Another clown approaches, and says "Excuse me!"

The clown with the umbrella explains: "I'm trying to do a very important balancing act between national security and personal freedoms, so I really can't talk to you right now!"

"Excuse Me!"

"I said I'm very busy with an important balancing act! National security. Please."

"Excuse me, but that's fake!"

Balancing clown is upset closes up umbrella, and ball is hanging on a string off of the top of the umbrella. There was no balancing act at all. It was faked all along.

"Look, I have more important things to do than to waste my time telling you the truth. We've got issues of NATIONAL SECURITY, and YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND!"  Stomps off.

PROP:

Ball on Umbrella Prop.

Tips:

The ball must be on a thin string, fishing line, or black carpet thread, attached to the top of the umbrella. The string must be of a length so that when umbrella is open and the ball is 'balanced' it rolls near the outside edge of the umbrella.

Asian style painted wax umbrellas are quite nice for this, and the design often will help hide the thread.

It can be skillfully rolled both forward and backwards. It looks more impressive this way, and also stops the string from winding around the top of the umbrella.

A Styrofoam or lightweight ball works well for this gag.
